More than 80 events and activities for people aged 60 and over will take place across the Wakefield district during October as the Time Well Spent Festival returns for a second year.

The month-long programme is designed to help older residents get active, meet new people, learn skills and improve their wellbeing.

Wakefield Council is delivering the festival with Age UK Wakefield District and community partners. Organisers say many of the activities are free or low-cost to make it easier for residents to take part.

The programme covers dance, history, learning, community events and volunteering opportunities at locations around the district.

What is happening during the festival?

Highlights include Forever Funky, a free daytime disco for people aged over 60, and Silver Sunday, which focuses on wellbeing, community and connection.

The programme also includes events linked to Wakefield Mental Health Day, the Wakefield Model Railway Show and guided tours of Pontefract Castle.

Individual listings in the festival guide provide dates, times, venues, prices and booking information. Residents can choose a single activity or build a programme across the month.

The festival is based around the Five Ways to Wellbeing: connecting with other people, staying active, continuing to learn, giving back and taking notice of the world around you.

Organisers say the varied programme is intended to demonstrate the number of activities and support services already available to older people across Wakefield and the surrounding towns.

Celebrating later life in Wakefield

Councillor Lukasz Borcz, Wakefield Council's Cabinet Member for Culture and Sport, said: "Time Well Spent celebrates the valuable contribution older people make to our communities. The festival is a chance to try something new, reconnect with others and discover the wide range of activities and support available across the district.

"Whether you attend one event or many, we hope everyone finds something that inspires them and helps them live well in later life."

The council said the festival is also an opportunity for residents to discover organisations, social groups and volunteering opportunities that continue beyond October.
