Wakefield Council is proposing to remove its two-hour free parking offer and introduce a free 30-minute period for on-street parking.

The package is due to be considered by Cabinet on Tuesday 20 October at 5.30pm. The changes have not yet been approved.

The council says a review found the existing two-hour offer made little difference to town and city-centre footfall. It estimates the scheme costs around £1.8 million a year.

Other proposals include removing the 15p online parking convenience charge, changing off-street charges and introducing a permit administration fee.

The council estimates the proposed package could raise around £2.5 million. It says the money would support digital payment systems, pay-and-display equipment, resurfacing, maintenance and safety improvements.

Councillor Keith Anderson, Cabinet member for highways, transport and planning, said the free half-hour on-street allowance and removal of the convenience charge were intended to help motorists and businesses.

A proposed £1 evening parking charge across council-run car parks would be subject to a separate consultation.

The council has not announced a start date for the proposed changes in its release. Residents can watch the Cabinet meeting live or afterwards through Wakefield Council’s YouTube channel.
