Wakefield Council has unveiled its Economic Growth Plan, setting out a long-term strategy to attract investment, create jobs, and develop local skills. Over 130 businesses and residents attended the launch event at WX to hear from Council Leader Cllr Karl Johnson about the plan's ambitions for the district.

Focus areas for growth

The Economic Growth Plan identifies advanced manufacturing, logistics, and creative industries as priority sectors expected to drive the district's future economic success. The plan also outlines support for businesses and skills development at all career stages, including apprenticeships and on-the-job training.

Council's commitment to business

Cllr Johnson said the council met with some of the district's largest employers at the event to understand what support they need to grow. He stated: "We are focused on how we can work together, in partnership to attract investment, create high-quality jobs, and support an even more skilled workforce across the district."

The Cabinet Member for Strategic Housing, Skills and Business Growth added: "We're committed to making it as easy as possible for businesses to invest and grow here by removing barriers and cutting unnecessary red tape. The Wakefield district is open for business, and we're ready to work alongside any organisation looking to relocate or expand."

External perspective

Professor Sir Chris Husbands, Chair of the Wakefield Futures Commission, provided a recorded video message for the event. He noted that Wakefield has "real assets, real ambition among residents, and a track record of weathering de-industrialisation better than many similar places."
