Wakefield Council has issued 20 fixed penalty notices and eight cautions for flytipping since April as part of a year-round enforcement drive. Several cases are awaiting court hearings for potential prosecutions, with dozens more investigations underway.
The council's enforcement officers investigate reports of illegally dumped waste and identify those responsible. Action taken includes fines, prosecutions, and vehicle seizures. The council also works alongside police on joint operations targeting suspected waste offences.
Why flytipping matters
Flytipping — leaving bags of rubbish or large items on side streets, highways, open land, or pavements — diverts council cleansing teams from other important work. Each clearance requires staff, equipment, and budget resources.
Wakefield Council has emphasised that there is no excuse for illegal dumping and that tackling flytipping is essential to maintaining pride in the district.
How to dispose of waste legally
Residents can:
• Take waste to Household Waste Recycling Centres
• Use the council's bulky waste collection service
• Hire a skip
• Use a registered waste collector
• Drop off waste at a bring site (do not leave waste at the side of containers if they are full; use another site instead)
Report flytipping
Residents can report flytipping offences online at the Wakefield Council website or by calling 03458 506506.
