Wakefield Council has begun a programme of road and public space improvements in the city centre, addressing resident concerns about the condition of roads and pavements.
The work forms part of the council's Summer of Action, an initiative designed to make the city centre safer, more accessible and more welcoming.
Roads Being Resurfaced
Resurfacing works have started on Westgate, Marygate and Wood Street. Work has already been completed on King Street and Silver Street.
The improvements include repainting road markings across the city centre and refurbishing street furniture, including benches around the Bull Ring.
Addressing Paving Issues
The council said residents have raised concerns about the state of roads, citing potholes, faded road markings and utility companies replacing paving with tarmac.
On Silver Street, excessive amounts of tarmac patches prompted the council to upgrade the area with coloured tarmac that blends with surrounding areas. Usable paving recovered from the work is being repurposed elsewhere in the city centre to remove other tarmac patches.
Some paving previously used on city centre pathways is no longer available, the council explained.

These improvements are part of the council's ongoing investment in highways and public spaces across the district.
