Wakefield Council has delivered improvements to the city centre following a focused summer programme carried out in partnership with Wakefield BID and West Yorkshire Police.

The Summer of Action targeted visible issues affecting residents' experience of the city centre, including street cleanliness, road conditions and anti-social behaviour.

Road and street improvements

Highways work included resurfacing key routes: Wood Street, Westgate and Marygate. Road markings around the city centre were repainted to improve road safety, and the pedestrianised area of Silver Street was improved. Materials were reused to enhance other locations across the city centre.

Teams also undertook deep cleaning, jet washing and sweeping of key areas, and removed and trimmed back overgrown vegetation from streets and public spaces.

Enforcement and anti-social behaviour

Council and police carried out targeted enforcement days focusing on street drinking, begging, fly-tipping and breaches of the Public Space Protection Order.

Next steps across the district

The Summer of Action was a pilot project. Following its success, Wakefield Council is now planning to roll out the same approach across the district's towns.
