Wakefield Council Cabinet is due to consider plans for a new city-centre hotel on 20 October. If approved and progressed through the planning process, ION Property Developments Limited would deliver the hotel on the site of the former Westgate station, next to Wakefield Westgate railway station, with work expected to begin in summer 2027.
The development will include at least 110 rooms and is designed to boost tourism and attract business travellers. Its proximity to the East Coast Main Line, with short journey times to Leeds, is expected to draw business stays to Wakefield.
Funding and timeline
Wakefield Council has provided up to £8 million from the Local Regeneration Fund to make the scheme financially deliverable.
If approved by Cabinet, ION will undertake site investigations and complete design work, with a planning application expected in Spring 2027. Construction is likely to start on site in Summer 2027, with the hotel expected to open in Winter 2028-29.
Developer background
ION Property Developments Limited has more than 30 years of experience delivering urban regeneration projects across the UK, including work in Liverpool, Wirral, Wolverhampton, and Denbighshire.
Next steps
Wakefield Council Cabinet will meet on Tuesday 20 October at 5.30pm to consider the proposal. The meeting will be broadcast live and available to watch later on the council's YouTube channel.
Correction, 13 October 2026: An earlier headline incorrectly described the hotel plans as approved. Cabinet is due to consider the proposal on 20 October; the construction and opening dates remain expected rather than confirmed.
