Wakefield Council has unveiled a new mural in Ossett on the side of Richmond's Butchers, opposite the Town Hall. The artwork was created by West Yorkshire-based artist Shiraaz Ali and celebrates the town's distinctive heritage.
The mural features Ossett landmarks including the stained-glass windows from the Town Hall, the peregrine falcon that visits Trinity Church's spire, local markets, the Coal Carrying tradition, and the war memorial. It is designed in three parts that replicate the shape of the Town Hall's windows.
Community Engagement
Shiraaz Ali engaged with local residents during the design process, holding public drop-in engagement sessions and consultation exhibitions at Trinity Church and Ossett Library. The artist also led presentations to eight groups at Ossett Academy to ensure residents of all age groups could contribute ideas.
Shiraaz Ali said: "'Welcome to Ossett' honours the history, festivities and patriotism of the town whilst celebrating its bright future. My role as the artist was to take inspiration from the people of Ossett to create a warm welcome into the town, make people feel proud of their home and bring smiles to daily life."
Installation and Support
The mural has been digitally printed onto aluminium composite panels and fabricated by Style – Signage, Graphics & Display of Ossett, which has over 40 years' experience in the industry.
Richmond's Butchers has been established in Ossett since 1945. Its owner said: "We're delighted our long-standing local business could be the site for this artwork, to help tell the story of our community and bring colour and pride to the local area."
The mural is part of the legacy of Our Year - Wakefield District 2024 and forms part of the 'Crossings and Gateways' programme. It has been supported with investment from Arts Council England and West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
