Wakefield Council's Cabinet will consider a new approach to managing the district's property and land at a meeting on Tuesday 22 September at 5.30pm.
The Council currently holds more than 1,600 assets across the district, covering over 35 million square metres. These include historic buildings such as County Hall, as well as libraries, leisure centres, museums, modern office accommodation and development sites.
What the new strategy proposes
The proposed approach would focus investment on buildings and facilities residents rely on daily. It also includes selling buildings that are no longer required or fit for purpose, with money generated being reinvested into services and other assets.
According to the Cabinet Member for Resources and Property, the Council has retained hundreds of assets with no clear plan for their future. The new strategy aims to sell buildings that have reached the end of their life, are no longer fit for purpose, or do not offer good value for money.
The Cabinet Member stated that decisive action is needed to prevent budget impacts similar to the deterioration of County Hall.
