Wakefield Council is preparing to approve an Employment and Skills Plan (2026-2029) designed to improve access to training, education, and better-paid jobs for residents of all ages.
The plan aims to strengthen routes into employment across the district by connecting the council, local partners, and employers. It responds to skills challenges, changes in the labour market, and available funding opportunities.
Focus on young people and barriers to work
The strategy places particular emphasis on supporting young people facing barriers to education, training, and employment. It proposes targeted support and improved pathways into learning and work to help young people build better futures.
Alignment with wider economic plans
The Employment and Skills Plan aligns with the Wakefield Futures report and the Economic Growth Plan. Both aim to ensure residents have the skills and support needed to benefit from economic growth, while giving businesses access to the skilled workforce required to expand across the district.
UNESCO Learning City commitment
As a recognised UNESCO Learning City, Wakefield has committed to making lifelong learning accessible to all residents. The new plan puts this commitment into action.
The plan is set to receive approval from Wakefield's key decision makers.
