Wakefield Council's Public Health Children's Team is hosting ICON Week from 21–25 September 2026, with a public event at The Ridings Shopping Centre on 22 and 23 September from 10am to 2pm outside Marks and Spencer's.

ICON stands for Infant Crying is Normal and Will Stop; Comfort Methods Can Sometimes Soothe Your Baby; It's OK to Walk Away for a Few Minutes if Your Baby is Safe and the Crying Feels Too Much; and Never Shake or Hurt a Baby.

What the campaign covers

ICON helps parents and carers understand that infant crying is a normal part of a baby's development and provides practical advice and reassurance during challenging times. This year's campaign highlights the important role of fathers, partners and male carers, with the message: Babies Cry, You Can Cope.

What to expect at The Ridings

Visitors to the shopping centre event can find out more about the ICON programme, access free resources, and discover how small moments of support can make a big difference in keeping babies safe and families supported.
