Wakefield Exchange (WX) will host legendary musician Bill Nelson for a special evening in conversation on Saturday 21 November. The Wakefield-born songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist rose to international prominence as the chief creative force behind rock band Be-Bop Deluxe, which he formed in 1973.
Nelson, now 78, will be interviewed by Ian Haydock. The conversation will focus on his five-decade music career, his childhood in Wakefield, and the city's 1960s music scene that shaped his artistic development. Photographs and archival images will illustrate the discussion on screen.
"I still find it hard to believe, at 78 years old, how a shy ten-year-old boy from Wakefield, with a toy guitar he'd been given for Christmas, ended up having a career as a musician lasting for more than fifty years. What an amazing journey it's been," Nelson said.
Film Screening and Atmosphere
The evening will include a screening of Nelson's film 'Wakefield via Time Machine', described as a unique and evocative journey through the city's past. A curated soundtrack will set the atmosphere before and after the event.
