Work on a new 110-room hotel at the site of the former Wakefield Westgate railway station will begin in 2027, with completion expected by winter 2028.

ION Property Developments Limited will build the hotel, which Wakefield Council says will meet growing demand from visitors and business travellers. The council expects the development to boost tourism and create new jobs in the city centre.

Government Funding and Location Benefits

The scheme has received £8m in government support from the Local Regeneration Fund to make it financially deliverable. The hotel's proximity to the East Coast Main Line, with short journey times to Leeds, is expected to attract business stays to Wakefield.

Matthew Pinder, cabinet member for district regeneration and regional growth, said: "This is a big step forward for our city's growth."
