Wakefield Council is hosting a Heritage Celebration Event on Thursday 8 October 2026, from 9.15am to 4pm at Nostell Priory. The event will bring together heritage organisations, community groups, and practitioners from across the district to connect, share ideas, and celebrate heritage work in local communities.
About the Event
The celebration is part of the multi-year "Our Heritage, Our Stories" programme, led by Wakefield Council and supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The programme works with local people and organisations to research and share stories, places and traditions that matter to them. It also aims to improve access, including digital access, to historic sites, archives and collections across the district.
The event will feature guest speakers including Helen Featherstone, Director of England, North at the National Lottery Heritage Fund; Jo Hudson, General Manager of National Trust – Nostell and West Yorkshire Properties; and representatives from West Yorkshire Archive Service, Wakefield Council, Castleford Civic Society, Felkirk Heritage Group, Wakefield Historical Society, and Gawthorpe Coal Carrying and Maypole Committee. Castleford and Pontefract Town Criers will also attend.
Stalls and Activities
Heritage organisations and groups with stalls at the event will include Castleford Civic Society, Castleford Heritage Trust, Creative Wakefield, Felkirk Heritage Group, Friends of Waterton's Wall, Holy Family Hub Pontefract, National Coal Mining Museum, Nostell – National Trust, Remember Barnbow, Wakefield Historical Society, Wakefield Museum and Castles, and Wakefield Libraries and Local Studies.
