Wakefield Council's Cabinet will consider a £500,000 funding proposal aimed at protecting the future of professional rugby league in Featherstone.
The report, due before Cabinet on Tuesday 20 October, asks members to approve a grant from the Rugby League Resilience Fund to the Rugby Football League.
The council says the money would support the purchase of Post Office Road and associated assets through the RFL Facilities Trust, following the club entering administration in 2025.
Funding would come with conditions
The contribution would require match funding from the RFL. Money would only be released once a sustainable operating entity had been identified and all relevant requirements met.
If approved, the plans would allow the ground to be leased to a new operator, with the aim of creating a successor club capable of returning to competition from 2027. Neither the grant nor that return has yet been confirmed.
A grant agreement would include protections for the public investment. Discussions are also taking place about possible support from national funding bodies.
Protecting facilities and heritage
Councillor Lukasz Borcz, cabinet member for culture and sport, said the proposals were about protecting rugby league heritage and facilities valued by local people.
The RFL welcomed the council's support but said it must be satisfied there was a viable, sustainable future for the game in the town.
Cabinet will also be asked to explore whether adjacent council-owned sports pitches could be included for possible community use.
