Monica Graham, former Conservative ward councillor for Wakefield South, has died. She served the ward for 15 years before stepping down in 2019 due to ill health.
The Leader of Wakefield Council paid tribute to Graham's service and her continued work in the community after leaving elected office.
Community Legacy
Graham led the establishment of Standbridge Community Centre in 2014. The centre has since been renamed the Monica Graham Centre in recognition of her work.
Graham remained active in local community work even after stepping back from her councillor role. She was known across all political parties for her commitment to helping residents of Wakefield South.
Tributes
The Council Leader described Graham as "one of the most popular elected members the Council chamber has ever seen." They noted her sense of humour, warmth, and natural charm earned her respect across party lines.
"She always said that her role as a councillor was to help people," the Leader said. "And that's exactly what she did."
